When the Girl is away…
July 7th, 2006 by Rhonda Filed under MiscIf you’ve ever been on a girls trip you’ve probably wondered what goes on at your house when you’re gone. I’ve asked my husband to write up an accurate description of life in our house when I’m off on a trip. With two teenagers to look after, I know it must be hard on him when I’m gone.
“Saturday. Wake up with the sun. (I should probably mention for your readers that our bedroom windows face WEST). I pull on some shorts and check on the kids. Still sleeping. Good. Enough time to shower and go pick up breakfast. I stop at Starbucks for an Americano and read the paper. I studiously browse the cereal and fruit section at the grocery store and then buy Krispy Kreme donuts.
I return home. The kids are still sleeping so I wake them by informing them of donuts. Donuts consumed. After a healthy breakfast the kids take positions in front of the computer and the television. I go to my computer and read through my blog list on Google Reader.
Lunch time! As they hear the creaking of floor under my footsteps the kids holler out - “are you making lunch?” Drat, I’m caught. Now I have to make sandwiches for everyone. Peanut butter and honey sandwiches with potato chips are enjoyed by all. Dishes are stacked neatly next to the sink.
Back down to the computers and television. I’m doing research on stocks. Our son is looking at cars on eBay and alt-tabbing between that and MySpace whenever I come into the room. Our daughter is watching “The Hills” on one of the MTV channels. She implores me to give it a chance. I politely decline and return to research.
Yard work! I spend about 15 minutes cutting the small patch of grass in front of our house.
After a shower that takes longer than the grass cutting, I head for the TV room. I wrest the remote control from our daughter and switch back and forth between several sporting events. Defeated, she heads off to shower for work. When our son makes a lunge for the clicker, I remind him that he has to go to work in an hour and he also heads for the shower.
At around 4:00 they both head to work. Luckily for me, they both get fed at work. I sink deeper into the sofa and grab a short nap. At 5:00 I re-awake in time to catch the last inning of the Astros game, which they lose. Sensing hunger, I check the freezer for dinners that Rhonda has carefully selected for us before her departure. I go with the sweet and sour chicken.
I take my frozen dinner with wine in front of the TV. Fortunately I am stocked with all three episodes of Lord of the Rings. I get halfway through the first and realize it’s not as much fun watching it by yourself. I check back to see if there are other sports on TV. Fortunately they’re showing a replay of the 2000 US Open Golf Tournament. I am set.
At around 10:00pm I check my mail and any updates on my favorite blogs. The kids come home shortly thereafter and we all grab a bowl of ice cream to watch the fifty thousandth showing of “The Waterboy” on TBS. Dishes are stacked neatly next to the sink. There will be time for those tomorrow.
At 12:00pm we all head off to bed. That’s it. It’s been a hard day.”

Too funny! Are you sure you’re not MY husband and children?
