My sister and I travel together all the time, and we do not consider our trips "girlfriend getaways" - they are just our vacations! The girlfriend getaway is a great starting point in talking about women's travel, but I think this article taps into the larger phenomenon of women traveling together.

Besides married women taking an extra "getaway" with the girls, more and more women are single, divorced, or widowed and simply do not have a traveling companion. (I count myself in that group). That doesn't stop us from traveling and experiencing life.

I hope we soon move beyond the focus on the long weekend with girlfriends, and start seeing women's travel on a larger scale. It is just as important to travelers, and the travel industry, as family or business travel.
