A Festival of Colors (Skagit Valley, near Seattle)

One of the most spectacular floral displays in the country occurs in Skagit Valley in April. Located 60 miles north of Seattle, Skagit Valley is the home of the Roozengaarde family business, which is the world’s largest grower of tulips, daffodils and irises. William Roozen, founder of Roozengaade, migrated to Skagit Valley from Holland where his family has grown tulips for centuries. Every year over 1,200 acres of bulbs are planted which reach their peak bloom in April.
The Skagit Valley Tulip Festival celebrates this event and runs from April 1 to April 30 this year. It can be pretty crowded during the festival with tour buses filled with spectators, but there’s room for everyone. Pick up a field map at a tulip information booth and tour the fields. The ground can be a little muddy in April, so make sure and wear waterproof footwear.
Don’t miss the Roozengaarde display garden which showcases 200,000 spring flowers. During my past visits I’ve always been amazed by the variety of tulips on display.
On the outskirts of the tulip fields you’ll find La Conner, a quaint, walk able town that’s fun to visit. When you get hungry try the Calico Cupboard Café, located on First Street. It’s very popular and serves great breakfasts. If you’re exploring La Conner in the afternoon, try the La Conner Brewing Company (also on First St.) for a cozy place to enjoy lunch.
