The Biltmore Estate, nestled in the Blue Ridge Mountains in North Carolina, is one of America’s great estates. The mansion, which is the largest private residence in America, has 250 rooms, 65 fireplaces, 34 bedrooms, a bowling alley and an indoor pool.  I loved the tropical feel of the indoor Winter Garden and touring the individual rooms. Each room is furnished with art and pieces collected from around the world.  As you explore the mansion, you’ll begin to experience a little of the Vanderbilts’ incredibly lavish lifestyle.  For a richer experience, get the audio guide or better yet, take the guided tour.

The estate covers 8,000 acres. Several films have been shot on location here including Forest Gump, Being There, Richie Rich, Patch Adams and Last of the Mohicans.  Be sure to tour the formal gardens which were designed by Frederick Law Olmsted. The gardens are in bloom from April through the fall.  Between April 1 and April 30 the estate is hosting their “Festival of Flowers” event.  In April the spring flowers, which includes 1,000 azaleas, should be at their peak.  Visit on a Saturday or Sunday during the festival and hear musical performances and free seminars on gardening and historical flower arranging.

The Biltmore Winery is also located on the estate. Stop in to take a wine tour and sample some of their wines.  The winery will also be celebrating the festival by offering special wine programs.
