Biltmore Estate – Part II (Asheville, N.C.)

When visiting the Biltmore I like to stay at the Grove Park Inn – a grand historic hotel that overlooks the Blue Ridge Mountains and the estate winery.  When you stand on the expansive rear balcony, you’ll feel like a member of the F. Scott Fitzgerald party, one of the Inn’s many illustrious guests that included the likes of Thomas Edison, Henry Ford and eight U.S. presidents.

And good news for spa lovers - the Grove Park Inn is better than ever with a recent renovation and a brand new 40,000 sq ft full service spa.

If you’d rather be closer to the Biltmore, another lodging option is Inn on Biltmore Estate. You can’t get any closer than being on the estate grounds.  As a guest you can take the shuttle to the mansion, gardens and winery. You can also hike on the many trails weaving through the 8,000 acre property.

If you really want to splurge, you’ll soon (April 2006) have the option to stay in a craftsman’s style cottage built in 1896 as a residence for the estate gardener.  The “Cottage on Biltmore Estate” includes a personal butler and chef.

For shopping, head into Asheville, a college town that feels like Austin or Berkeley, with a few less freaks and hippies.  Browse through dozens of art galleries and check out the local artistry. While you’re downtown, stop by The Early Girl Eatery, located on Wall Street.  The Early Girl specializes in comfort food with fresh ingredients from local growers.
