Hotel Del Coronado (San Diego, CA)

Hotel Del CoronadoOne of my favorite get-togethers took place at the Hotel Del Coronado in San Diego.  With its Victorian architecture, palm trees and white sandy beaches it’s no wonder USA Today calls “The Del” one of the top ten resorts in the world. Built in 1888 the hotel is a National Historic Landmark and where the 1959 movie classic, “Some Like it Hot”, was filmed with Marilyn Monroe, Tony Curtis and Jack Lemmon.

When the four of us stayed at The Del, we were celebrating our sister’s birthday.  After mentioning this at check-in, the hotel suggested an upgrade to a large suite in the original section of the hotel.  Our suite had a great vintage feel about it, especially the bathroom’s black and white tile work, and our casement windows overlooked a manicured courtyard.

For activities, you can relax at the outdoor pool, take a yoga class, or walk a few steps to the beach.  We spent an afternoon reading and lounging on the beach and the temperature was a nearly perfect 78 degrees.  The hotel also offers spa services and will unveil a new, expanded spa this summer with 22 treatment rooms, private terrace and infinity pool overlooking the Pacific Ocean.

There are several restaurants and cafes in the hotel to choose from - several with breath-taking ocean views.  The Del’s Sunday brunch in the Crown Room was voted “Best in San Diego”.  On Sunday afternoon’s you can also enjoy Afternoon Tea in the Palm Court.
