U.S. passportPlanning a journey abroad?  To help your trip go smoothly, here’s a quick summary of the U.S. State Department’s tips for women travelers.

Before You Go

  • Check to see if your passport needs to be updated.
  • Leave a copy of your itinerary, passport and tickets with your family or a friend at home.
  • Learn about the laws and customs of the country you’re visiting, especially those relating to women.  Some countries have very different views on what is appropriate behavior and dress for women.  Fashion differences are no laughing matter - foreigners visiting Saudi Arabia have been arrested in the past for “improper dress”.
  • Check the Bureau of Consular Affairs web site for country travel advisories.
  • If you’re taking a prescription medication, bring enough for the entire trip plus a few extra days in case you’re delayed. Keep the medicine in its labeled container, so there’s no question that it’s a legal drug.
  • Leave real or costume jewelry that looks valuable at home.

While You’re There

Unfortunately petty theft is a problem in many countries.  Be prepared by keeping your valuables out of easy reach.

  • Store your passport, cash and at most one credit card in a neck pouch or money belt under your clothes.
  • Limit the amount of cash you bring and use ATMs to get local currency.
  • Try not to look like a tourist.  Dress like the locals and try to blend in.
  • Get directions before you explore.  Studying a map while on the street will announce that you’re a tourist. Instead, transfer directions to a smaller sheet of paper.
  • Be confident about where you’re going.
  • Dress modestly to avoid offending residents in the country you’re visiting.
